The 6.5 Weatherby RPM is the 6.5mm member of Weatherby's Rebated Precision Magnum family, built on the same idea as its siblings: magnum velocity from a rebated-rim case that fits standard six-lug actions and lighter rifles. It brought the Weatherby high-velocity approach to the widely popular 6.5mm (.264 caliber) bore. Ballistically the 6.5 Weatherby RPM drives aerodynamic 6.5mm bullets at high velocity, producing a flat trajectory and strong long-range performance, with recoil moderate for its class — milder than the larger-bore RPM cartridges while delivering more velocity than the standard 6.5mm rounds. It slots into the higher-velocity portion of the 6.5mm spectrum without reaching the extreme overbore territory of the 6.5-300 Weatherby. As a newer cartridge in a proprietary family, its rifle and ammunition selection is narrower and centered on Weatherby. It offers 6.5mm shooters a magnum-velocity option in the modern lightweight-rifle format, distinct from the efficient, milder 6.5 Creedmoor and the larger 6.5 PRC. Today the 6.5 Weatherby RPM is used for big-game hunting, long-range target shooting, and varmint hunting, with availability centered in Weatherby rifles and ammunition. Its combination of high 6.5mm velocity in a standard-action, lightweight-rifle package is what defines its niche.
