About this caliber
22 ARC
The 22 ARC (Advanced Rifle Cartridge) is a modern centerfire rifle cartridge introduced by Hornady in 2024. Designed to drive efficient, aerodynamic .22-caliber bullets from the compact AR-15 platform, it targets long-range precision and varmint shooting with low recoil.

The 22 ARC was introduced by Hornady in 2024, extending the design thinking behind the 6mm ARC to the .22 caliber. Like its 6mm sibling, it was engineered to deliver meaningful long-range ballistic performance from the compact, lightweight AR-15 platform — a capability the platform's traditional cartridges do not match — by efficiently launching modern high-ballistic-coefficient .224-caliber bullets. Ballistically the 22 ARC drives aerodynamic .22-caliber bullets at high velocity with low recoil, producing a flat trajectory and strong wind resistance and retained velocity at distance, well beyond what the platform's standard chamberings achieve. Within the AR-15 size class it offers an appealing pairing of long-range capability, efficiency, and mild recoil, which is the core of its design intent. It is aimed at precision shooters, competitors, and varmint and predator hunters who want improved downrange ballistics in a compact semi-automatic rifle, as well as in bolt actions. As a very new cartridge its rifle and ammunition selection is at an early stage relative to established rounds, though it is backed by Hornady and the credibility of the broader ARC and long-range bullet lineup. Today the 22 ARC is positioned for long-range target shooting, varmint and predator hunting, and competition, with an early but growing base of support. Its combination of efficient .22-caliber long-range ballistics, AR-15 compatibility, and low recoil is what distinguishes it as a modern entry in the category.
